Destiny Matrix Karmic Tail: All 26 Combinations

By Destiny Matrix Calculator editorial team · · 17 min read

The destiny matrix karmic tail is a chain of three numbers at the bottom of your chart, read as a symbolic picture of one recurring lesson. It starts at the base point (D), runs through the lower inner point (j) and ends at the outer point (r). Each number is a Major Arcana card, and together the three describe a pattern to notice rather than a fate to fear.

Why the destiny matrix karmic tail matters

Of all the parts of a destiny matrix chart, the tail is one of the parts people look up most often. There is a reason. A single position tells you about one corner of your life, but the tail is a short sequence, and a sequence reads like a story: where a pattern starts, how it shows up in daily choices, and where it asks to be resolved. That is a handy shape for self-reflection.

Most teachers of the method describe the tail as the part of the chart that carries your most persistent theme. Some schools link it to past lives, and others simply treat it as a habit you picked up early, from family or from the way you learned to cope. This page stays on the practical side. You do not have to believe in reincarnation to ask, "What do I keep doing that I would like to do differently?" The tail is a prompt for that question.

There is also a very ordinary reason it is popular: it is small and finite. Only 26 different tails can occur. We ran every calendar date from 1900 to 2100 (73,414 dates) through our own calculator and got exactly 26 distinct triplets, no more. That means a handful of tails are shared by a large share of people, a few are rare, and no tail is "yours alone". Treat it as a lens that many people look through, and ask what it shows in your own life.

If you want the bigger picture first, our guide to how to read a destiny matrix chart shows where the tail sits among the other positions.

How to find your destiny matrix karmic tail

You only need three of the chart's base numbers (day, month, year) and a bit of addition. The one rule to know is reduction: whenever a result is above 22, add its digits until it is 22 or lower. 22 stays 22, and there is no zero.

Here is the sequence, using 15 May 1990 as the worked example:

  1. Day (A) is the day reduced to 22 or lower. 15 stays 15.
  2. Month (B) is the month number as it is, 5.
  3. Year (C) is the digits of the year added together and reduced: 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19.
  4. Base point (D) is A + B + C reduced: 15 + 5 + 19 = 39, then 3 + 9 = 12.
  5. Center (E) is A + B + C + D reduced: 15 + 5 + 19 + 12 = 51, then 5 + 1 = 6.
  6. Middle of the tail (j) is D + E reduced: 12 + 6 = 18.
  7. End of the tail (r) is D + j reduced: 12 + 18 = 30, then 3 + 0 = 3.

So the tail for 15 May 1990 is 12 · 18 · 3: The Hanged Man, The Moon and The Empress.

Two practical cautions before you compare notes with other sources:

  • Order. We read the tail from the base point outward: D, then j, then r. Some sites write the same three numbers in another order, such as outermost first, or base point first and outer point second. A tail written 3-18-12 on one site and 12-18-3 on another may be the same chart. When you look up a meaning, check which point the first number refers to. If you use our free destiny matrix calculator, the tail is shown in base-outward order.
  • Reduction style. The digit-sum method above is the most common one, and it is the one we use. A smaller group of teachers subtract 22 instead of adding digits, which gives a different answer for some dates. For 29, adding digits gives 11 while subtracting 22 gives 7. If your numbers do not match a friend's chart, this is the first thing to check.

What the three points mean

Schools phrase this a little differently, but the common thread is that the three points work as a progression.

The base point (D) is the starting theme, sometimes called the karmic task. Read it as the familiar pattern you fall back on, especially under stress. It is the number you may recognize in yourself immediately, and maybe with a wince.

The inner point (j) sits on the vertical axis just above the base and is the bridge. It shows how the pattern turns up in daily life, and it is also the point where the chart's love line begins, which is why tails are often discussed in terms of relationships. Our guide to the relationship channel goes further into that line.

The outer point (r) is the far end of the chain. Think of it as the direction the lesson points: the quality that tends to help once you notice the pattern. Some readers treat it as the "result" of the first two, and others as what you are being invited to grow into. Different schools read this differently, so hold it loosely.

Reading the three together matters more than reading any one alone. A hard-looking card at the base can sit beside a gentle card at the end, and that pairing tells a hopeful story. The reverse can also be true, in which a pleasant opening card is followed by one that asks for more honesty.

The 26 karmic tail combinations

Below is every tail the method can produce, ordered from the most to the least common in our count of dates from 1900 to 2100. Percentages are the share of those dates that land on each tail, so they add up to roughly 100.

For each tail, we list the three cards, a short reading in our own words, and the labels other sites give it. The labels are worth seeing because they show how much interpretation lives in this system. One site calls a tail "The Rebel" where another calls it "Family and Belonging". We have no authority to rank them, and we did not try to. Every reading below is a symbolic prompt for self-reflection.

5-15-20 · The Hierophant, The Devil, Judgement

Cards: The Hierophant, The Devil, Judgement. 10.2% of dates. Other sites: Family Rebellion, The Rebel, Family and Belonging.

The most common tail is about inherited rules. The base card points to traditions, teachers and family expectations that told you how things are done. The middle card shows the tension that follows: staying loyal to a script you quietly resent, or rebelling so hard that you discard the good parts too. The closing card asks for an honest review. Which rules would you choose again today? Try writing two lists, rules you keep on purpose and rules you keep out of habit.

7-12-19 · The Chariot, The Hanged Man, The Sun

Cards: The Chariot, The Hanged Man, The Sun. 9.5% of dates. Other sites: Peaceful Warrior, The Warrior, Strength and Perspective.

Drive, a forced pause, then daylight. The base card is a habit of pushing forward and treating rest as wasted time. The middle card appears when pushing stops working and you are left hanging, seeing things from another angle. The end card suggests effort feels lighter when it is aimed at something you enjoy. Watch for fights nobody asked you to take on. Before your next big push, say in one sentence what it is for and whom it serves.

8-15-5 · Justice, The Devil, The Hierophant

Cards: Justice, The Devil, The Hierophant. 9.3% of dates. Other sites: Honor Code, The Holy Inquisition, Loyalty and Desire.

Fairness meets appetite, then rules arrive again. This tail often describes someone who cares deeply about what is right, yet may use moral certainty as cover for wanting control, or bend their own rules in private. The labels range from "honor code" to "inquisition", so it clearly reads in more than one way. When you feel certain you are right, ask which of your own wants is also in the room.

9-18-9 · The Hermit, The Moon, The Hermit

Cards: The Hermit, The Moon, The Hermit. 8.9% of dates. Other sites: Guarded Knowledge, Hidden Knowledge, Knowledge and Solitude.

Solitude surrounds uncertainty on both sides. The pattern is keeping what you know to yourself, partly from caution and partly from fear that sharing will cost you. The middle card brings imagination and doubt, which can make hiding feel safer than speaking. The invitation is gradual: share one half-formed insight with one trusted person each week and watch what happens.

10-21-4 · Wheel of Fortune, The World, The Emperor

Cards: Wheel of Fortune, The World, The Emperor. 8.5% of dates. Other sites: The Oppressed Pillar, The Oppressed Soul, Self-Worth and Initiative.

Cycles, completion, then authority. People with this tail often learn early to meet outside expectations, finish what they are asked to finish and hold things up for others. Sites describe the cost as living by someone else's script. The end card is about structure you choose for yourself. List three expectations you carry, then decide, one by one, whether to keep, adjust or put each down.

4-12-16 · The Emperor, The Hanged Man, The Tower

Cards: The Emperor, The Hanged Man, The Tower. 6.7% of dates. Other sites: Power Without Worth, The Sovereign, Authority and Flexibility.

Control, surrender, upheaval. A firm structure can feel safe, but this tail hints at what happens when a plan has no room for feedback: it holds until it suddenly does not. The practice is to build review into your plans. Put a date on the calendar to ask what is working, and what you would change if you were not afraid of looking wrong. Only two of our three sources give a clear reading here, so treat it as lightly sketched.

6-18-6 · The Lovers, The Moon, The Lovers

Cards: The Lovers, The Moon, The Lovers. 6.2% of dates. Other sites: Love From Within, Affairs of the Heart, Love and Free Will.

Choice and imagination wrapped around each other. The theme is romantic: it is easy to build a picture of someone and then fall for the picture. The Moon in the middle blurs fact and fantasy. The Lovers on both ends ask for clear, freely made choices. When a new connection excites you, separate what the person actually said and did from what you filled in.

11-15-8 · Strength, The Devil, Justice

Cards: Strength, The Devil, Justice. 4.5% of dates. Other sites: Power Imbalance, Violence, Anger and Ethical Strength.

Gentle mastery, then intensity, then boundaries. Readers connect this tail with how force and frustration are handled: strength turned inward, or power that lands harder than meant. The closing card is the answer sites keep returning to, which is protecting fair limits without overpowering anyone. Practice noticing the first small sign of anger, and name the need underneath it before it grows.

3-9-12 · The Empress, The Hermit, The Hanged Man

Cards: The Empress, The Hermit, The Hanged Man. 4.5% of dates. Other sites: Attachment to Mother, Isolation, Love and Self-Sufficiency.

Nurturing, withdrawal, pause. Many describe a caring person who retreats when closeness gets tender, then waits. Some schools tie the base card to the relationship with a mother figure, while others read it more widely. The healthy direction is a full life that does not depend on any single relationship, while still letting people in. Try telling one person this week that you would like their company.

11-6-17 · Strength, The Lovers, The Star

Cards: Strength, The Lovers, The Star. 4.0% of dates. Other sites: Faith in Your Talent, Wasted Talent, Talent and Discipline.

Courage, choice, hope. A gift is present, but it may sit unused out of modesty or uncertainty about which path to choose. The Lovers in the middle is about choosing, and the Star at the end rewards steady, unglamorous practice. Pick one skill and give it one protected hour a week for a month.

6-9-15 · The Lovers, The Hermit, The Devil

Cards: The Lovers, The Hermit, The Devil. 3.8% of dates. Other sites: Daydream Director, The Libertine, Passion and Commitment.

Idealizing, retreating, craving. In relationships this pattern swings between a picture-perfect hope and a pull toward intensity that fades. The middle card is the pause between the two. What helps is slowing down: time spent getting to know someone ordinary, and honesty about whether you want closeness or only the spark.

12-18-3 · The Hanged Man, The Moon, The Empress

Cards: The Hanged Man, The Moon, The Empress. 3.7% of dates. Other sites: Worth Without Sacrifice, Empathy, Body and Acceptance. This is the tail for our 15 May 1990 example.

Surrender, sensitivity, nurture. The theme is giving a lot, often at your own expense, and feeling things deeply while doing it. Some sites link the middle card to worry about the body. That is symbolic only and not a medical statement, so please take any real health worry to a qualified professional. For reflection: where do you serve others without being asked? Practice saying no to one small request this week and see what you notice.

22-3-7 · The Fool, The Empress, The Chariot

Cards: The Fool, The Empress, The Chariot. 3.2% of dates. Other sites: Freedom From Within, The Prisoner, Inner Freedom.

Open freedom, growth, then direction. The pattern is a love of freedom that can drift into carelessness, followed by the lesson that freedom lasts when it comes with some structure. The Chariot at the end is discipline you choose. Pick one habit you want and make it small enough that you will do it on a bad day.

21-9-3 · The World, The Hermit, The Empress

Cards: The World, The Hermit, The Empress. 2.9% of dates. Other sites: The Warden, The Overseer, Power and Service.

Completion, solitude, nurture. Sites differ here, but they agree about the risk of helping in a way that keeps others small, or of imagining that things will come together without concrete steps. The healthier version is service that leaves people stronger. Before you step in to help, ask whether the person wants it.

20-6-8 · Judgement, The Lovers, Justice

Cards: Judgement, The Lovers, Justice. 2.6% of dates. Other sites: Accepting the Family Line, Estranged From Family, Family Expectations.

A calling, a choice, and a sense of fairness. This tail points at family. You may feel pulled toward your relatives and also pushed away by what they expect. The question underneath is how to separate love from achievement and still answer your own calling. A letter you never send, listing what you owe and what you do not, can help.

19-3-22 · The Sun, The Empress, The Fool

Cards: The Sun, The Empress, The Fool. 2.3% of dates. Other sites: Coming of Age, The Unborn Child, Belonging and New Beginnings.

Joy, growth, beginnings. Sites describe potential that has not fully arrived: childlike play that sometimes shows up in adult settings where it does not fit, or talent waiting for permission. The invitation is to bring warmth and visibility into your life with a grounded sense of belonging. Try one small thing this week that you would be proud to be seen doing.

18-9-9 · The Moon, The Hermit, The Hermit

Cards: The Moon, The Hermit, The Hermit. 2.0% of dates. Other sites: Turning Inward, The Secret Magus, Responsible Knowledge.

Uncertainty first, then solitude twice. The pattern is putting down a real ability, sometimes out of fear of deciding badly. The Hermit at the end suggests wisdom takes shape alone, and the work is bringing it back to people. Name one decision you have postponed and write down the smallest possible next step.

17-6-5 · The Star, The Lovers, The Hierophant

Cards: The Star, The Lovers, The Hierophant. 1.7% of dates. Other sites: Worth Without Comparison, Pride, Humility and Craft.

Hope, choice, tradition. The lesson here is talent without a sense of being owed. Some sites describe waiting to be noticed, others emphasize humility and craft. Practice putting your work in front of one person who will give honest feedback.

16-21-10 · The Tower, The World, Wheel of Fortune

Cards: The Tower, The World, Wheel of Fortune. 1.4% of dates. Other sites: The Guide in the Shadows, The Cult Servant, Spiritual Integrity.

Rupture, completion, cycles. This tail concerns an unfinished mission and the temptation to guide others in order to feel needed. The healthy end of it is integrity: what you teach and what you do line up. Ask yourself whether your advice follows your own behavior.

13-21-7 · Death, The World, The Chariot

Cards: Death, The World, The Chariot. 1.2% of dates. Other sites: The Destructive Rescuer, The Castigator, Protection and Renewal.

Endings, completion, drive. The pattern is rescuing people compulsively or refusing to move on from a situation that is already finished. The Chariot offers a constructive answer: aim that strength at repair. When you feel the urge to rescue, ask what you would be avoiding if you did not.

15-18-6 · The Devil, The Moon, The Lovers

Cards: The Devil, The Moon, The Lovers. 1.1% of dates. Other sites: Charisma and Temptation, Dark Matters, Influence and Consent.

Attraction, doubt, choice. Charisma is part of this picture, and so is the responsibility that comes with it. Sites focus on influence: how you shape other people's decisions, and whether they would agree if they saw the full picture. Practice making your requests plain and leaving room for a no.

14-6-20 · Temperance, The Lovers, Judgement

Cards: Temperance, The Lovers, Judgement. 0.9% of dates. Other sites: The Balance of Giving, The Victim, Sacrifice and Balance.

Balance, choice, calling. The shared theme is belonging without erasing yourself, and noticing the good that is already present. Self-doubt and other people's opinions can crowd out your own measure. Keep a short list each evening of what went well.

10-3-13 · Wheel of Fortune, The Empress, Death

Cards: Wheel of Fortune, The Empress, Death. 0.2% of dates. Other sites: A Taste for Life, The Value of Life, Choosing Life and Renewal.

A rare tail of cycles, growth and endings. Readings agree it is about staying connected to life through loss and rebuilding, and about not living someone else's version of your life. Decide one thing this month that is only yours.

7-21-10 · The Chariot, The World, Wheel of Fortune

Cards: The Chariot, The World, Wheel of Fortune. 0.2% of dates. Other sites: The Warrior Without Faith, The Crusader, Conviction and Choice.

Drive, completion, cycles. Strong convictions can become fighting without direction or help given when nobody asked. The task is to hold your beliefs firmly while leaving other people free to choose theirs.

9-9-18 · The Hermit, The Hermit, The Moon

Cards: The Hermit, The Hermit, The Moon. 0.2% of dates. Other sites: Fear of Manipulation, Magical Enslavement, Trust and Discernment.

Another rare combination. Solitude repeated, then uncertainty. The themes are trust, discernment, and worry that a gift may be controlled by someone else. The balance sits between suspicion and openness: stay discerning without assuming the worst.

8-6-14 · Justice, The Lovers, Temperance

Cards: Justice, The Lovers, Temperance. 0.1% of dates. Other sites: Strength and Empathy, The Dictator, Power and Moderation.

The rarest tail in our count. Fairness, choice and balance point toward giving and receiving in proportion, and toward sharing power through agreement rather than duty alone.

How to work with your karmic tail

A tail is only useful if it changes something small. Here is a simple routine:

  1. Write the three numbers and cards at the top of a page.
  2. Read the base card first. Ask where you have seen this pattern in the last month. Pick one concrete example.
  3. Read the inner card. How did the pattern play out in a relationship or in how you talk to people?
  4. Read the outer card. Which small action would move you a little toward it?
  5. Try that action once, then write what happened.

Repeat for a few weeks. If a tail reading does not fit you, drop it. The goal is not to decide who you are but to give yourself better questions.

You may also find it useful to compare your tail with your love line, because the inner tail point is also where that line begins. Our post on the destiny matrix ideal partner follows the same line to its middle point.

What this can and cannot tell you

The destiny matrix is a self-reflection tool. It does not predict events, and nothing on this page is a promise about your future, your relationships or your health. Karmic tail readings in particular are interpretive: sources disagree on names, on order and on meanings, and none of them is backed by scientific testing. Past-life language is a symbolic framing, not a fact we can verify.

Nor is this a medical or psychological diagnosis. Any mention of the body, stress or emotions is symbolic only. If something is troubling you, please talk with a qualified professional. Use the tail as a conversation starter with yourself, then do whatever works for you.
